Riverview, Florida -- A woman has been arrested for living in another person's home for seven months.
Hillsborough Sheriff's deputies say on Feb. 15, Jeanella Pollock moved into the home on Potomac Circle with her husband and teenage daughter, even though the home belonged to a woman currently living in Alabama.
"The defendant had in fact changed the locks and she had applied for and was granted the name of the power and water into her name as well," said Larry McKinnon of the Hillsborough Co. Sheriff's Office.
When Pollock filed an Adverse Possession form in February, the owner of the home was notified and told detectives she had not given anyone permission to move into her vacant home.
According to Florida Statutes, a person can ask a judge for Adverse Possession to declare unused, abandoned property- and as long as the filer pays the taxes, then the property is their's after seven years.
However in this case, the owner said she moved out due to financial difficulties, but was working with the bank to retain the home, so it was not abandoned.
"I spent 30 years building homes, selling homes, mortgaging homes and I know nobody gives you a free house," said Eric Bond, who owns the property with his wife Sharon.
On August 15, Pollock was arrested and detectives are continuing with the investigation to determine if additional arrests are warranted.
When Eric and Sharon were finally allowed back in their home last week, they found evidence that Pollock's husband, Manatee County Sheriff's Deputy Leon Pollock, also lived there.
Since Leon Pollock may have lived in the home, he has been placed on administrative leave from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
His wife has since bonded out of jail after posting $22,500 bond.
