Clearwater, Florida -- A police officer in in the hospital after being hit by a woman trying to flee a traffic stop.
The incident began when a hit-and-run accident was reported to Clearwater Police around 12:51 p.m. on August 16. Three police found the suspect vehicle, driven by Nicole Syphers, in a parking lot on Court Street and began to initiate a traffic stop.
According to reports, Syphers accelerated towards the officers and struck Officer Darcy Hunt in the leg. Fearing for their lives, the two other officers fired shots and the woman drove her car over a wall, blowing out her tires in the process.
Officers Hunt was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Syphers was taken into custody and charges are pending.
