Bradenton, Florida -- The Manatee County Natural Resources Department is applying a prescribed fire at Pine Island Preserve on Thursday, August 22.
In the coming months a multi-agency group will be working together in an effort to re-introduce fire to Pine Island Preserve.
This initial prescribed, or controlled, fire will remove the hazardous level of fuel on the property. The longer vegetation accumulates, the more destructive an eventual fire will be, burning hotter and moving faster, having unpredictable results.
Prescribed fire greatly reduces the potential for wildfire. Within a week of the fire, new plant life will start to grow providing fresh new shoots for wildlife and allowing for a greater diversity of species.
The window for the event will begin on Thursday August 22 and run through mid October.
Manatee County's Natural Resources Department is working with the local Fire Rescue agencies, police, health department, and Florida Forest Service to insure a safe, successful burn event.
Pine Island Preserve is located near the SR 64 Boat Ramp at the mouth of the Braden River
