Brandon, Florida -- Over 100 fifth graders from Kingswood Elementary are taking their skills to the next level as they prepare to blast off into space.
Suited up in lab coats, the students are ready to win their task of creating a design on an experiment that will work in zero gravity. It's all part of a science experiment competition where more than 1,000 students from 11 Hillsborough County elementary schools are competing to have their science experiment conducted at the International Space Station.
The winning team will go to the district finals based on their science proposal. Teachers say although it's a competition it's key the students gain a good understanding about space.
The District Review Board will then select three finalists for final review to The Review Board for the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education.
They will select one of the finalists to blast off into space and be tested at the International Space Station.
Students will get the chance to watch the launch live on NASA TV in late spring 2014 and to see how astronauts work and live in space.
