(USA TODAY) -- Sales of Apple's new iPhone models - the 5s and 5c - began in earnest Friday around the world.
to Apple's website, sliver and "space grey" versions of the iPhone 5s
are available in 7-10 business days, while consumers hoping to snag a
gold iPhone 5s will have to wait until October.
Eager consumers around the world braved lines at Apple stores in hopes of securing the new iPhones.
Chris Walker, 44, of Indianapolis was fifth in line at the AT&T
store in Avon, Ind., where about 30 people were waiting at 7:50 a.m.
was happy with his old Android phone but his wife and son wanted
iPhones. "I'm not a big Apple fan or anything," said Walker, who had
been waiting in line since about 3:30 a.m. "But the consensus was it is
time for me to get one."
Saul Diaz, 18, an Indianapolis resident, was second in line. He had
been there since 10 p.m. Thursday, passing part of that time messing
with his iPhone 5.
Diaz said he has had every iPhone that has come
out, and always gets a new one on the day they are released. "I guess
its just because iPhones are really cool to have," said the University
of Indianapolis student.
Beau Ballard and Levi Livengood got to
the Verizon Wireless store in Asheville, N.C., at 12:30 a.m. to get in
line. They were first in line for the new iPhone 5s when the doors
opened at 8 a.m.
Ballard said he was keeping a promise to the
mother of his month-old son, who amazingly let him stay out all night.
"Yeah man," he said. "She's getting a pink iPhone out of it."The line
stretched around the back of the store and numbered between 70 and 100
people before doors opened.
WALL STREET: Watching early iPhone sales nervously
artist Tyler Ferguson and friend and client Mike Scott, both 25,
arrived at the Best Buy in Fort Myers, Fla., about four hours before the
store was scheduled to open, at 8 a.m. They passed the time sitting in
lawn chairs on the sidewalk, watching TV and movies on an Apple laptop.
They needn't have bothered getting up so early: by 7:50, no more than
five customers waited at store doors.
Ferguson has owned iPhones "since the first one came out."

uses his phone to post his work on Facebook and Instagram, and says it
draws customers from as far away as Tampa and Miami, two- and three-hour

have the newest phone," said Scott, a Fort Myers resident who works with
his dad in a home-remodeling business. After he gets the phone,
"there'll be work today, but not much attention," Scott said.

The iPhone 5s and 5c go on sale Friday in the U.S., U.K., China, France, Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore.
