Clearwater, FL - Clearwater Central Catholic came into their Class 3A-5 district matchup against St. Petersburg Catholic with a lot of confidence. And early on, it showed on the scoreboard. The Marauders jumped out to a 28-0 lead, then held on for a 35-14 victory.
Down 28-0, the Barons didn't roll over and play dead. With seconds remaining in the first half, a hard hit on CCC quarterback Jeff Smith resulted in a fumble, that Elevisi Halapio scooped up and returned for a touchdown, a getting St. Pete Catholic on the board.
Early in the third quarter, Barons sophmore running back Tony Jones cut the lead to 28-14, with a 33-yard scamper around the the right side.
But that would be as close as St. Pete Catholic would get. Clearwater Central Catholic added another score in the fourth quarter score, and held on for the 35-14 district victory.
With the win, the Marauders 5-1, (2-0) strengthen their grip on the 3A-5 district title, while the Barons 4-2, (1-1) are in the running for the runnerup spot.
