Clearwater, Florida -- The city is warning residents about companies making sales pitches for water testing and water line maintenance to their homes.
"The city does not endorse any private water companies, nor does the city's water require additional testing or filtering," the city stated. "Clearwater Public Utilities has stringent processes including water sampling to ensure water quality."
Private companies, the city says, have approached homeowners about a water line protection program, and, in the past, have claimed they could improve the quality and safety of tap water, which already meets or exceeds all federal and state standards for safe drinking water.
The city recommends if you are approached with such a sales pitch, contact the Better Business Bureau before doing business with the. If you've been approached and feel you're misled, contact the state attorney's office, economic crimes, at (813)-287-7900.
