Tampa, Florida -- There was plenty on the line Friday night at Sickles High School. The Gryphons needed a win over Tampa Bay Tech to wrap up the 7A-District 7 championship and they cruised to a 35-8 win.
Sickles (8-1, 5-0) started fast like they always do. On the first possession of the game, the Gryphons got a 44-yard touchdown pass from Issac Holder to Jaaron Barrett to open the scoring at 7-0. Jake Hampton got an interception a few plays later and that set up a short score by Ray Ray McCloud.
The Gryphons' star running back wasn't done. McCloud scored from 1-yard out just before the end of the first quarter to put Sickles up 21-0 and punched it in from 1-yard out again to start the second quarter.
The Gryphons held on to a 28-8 lead after three quarters and eventually claimed their title. They will wrap up the regular season with a home game against Alonso next week.
Tampa Bay Tech's (6-3, 3-2) loss, coupled with Gaither's win over Steinbrenner, means the Titans miss the playoffs. Gaither is the runner up in 7A-7.
