Zephyrhills, Florida -- Pasco against Zephyrhills football is known simply as The 9-Mile War. For more than 70 years these two schools, separated by only nine miles have faced off in one of the Bay area's most intense rivalries.
This year, the winner of the game also will claim the runner-up spot in Class 5A, District 6.
Pasco got on the board in the first quarter when Zack Gleaton, attempting to punt out of Zephyrhills own end zone, dropped the snap. Lane Stancil recovered the ball, and the Pirates lead 7-0.
Near the end of the first half, Pasco quarterback Grant Starling connected with Nate Craig for a 52-yard score, giving the Pirates a 14-7 hafltime lead and the momentum.
Antwione Sims bowled his way in from 7 yards and the Bulldogs were back in the game.
But in the fourth quarter, with Pasco holding a 17-16 lead, Malik Johns broke loose and ran 61 yards for the score, and the Pirates won 24-16.
Pasco (6-3, 4-2) advances to the postseason for the seventh consecutive year, while Zephyrhills (7-2, 4-2) will not be in the playoffs for the seventh straight year as well.
