(CBS NEWS) 41-year-old Jon Kitna, the Cowboys new backup quarterback, is going to pull in a nice little $53,000 payday for the week of Christmas. But he's going to put it to good use.
Kitna, per the Dallas Morning-News, is going to donate the money he earns with the Cowboys to the Tacoma, Wash. high school where he teaches math.
He'd been pushing protractors at Lincoln High School for a few years now since leaving the NFL in 2011 after three years of playing for the Cowboys as the backup to Tony Romo.
When Romo went down with a back injury, Dallas needed an option to fill the depth chart behind Kyle Orton. (Romo is most likely out in Week 17's win-or-go-home game against the Eagles, though Jerry Jones still won't rule him out completely.)
The Cowboys tried out a few quarterbacks but ultimately decided on Orton, mainly because of how familiar he is with coach Jason Garrett and the current system. Kitna apparently texted Garrett when Romo's back issue popped up and let him know he'd be available.
"I told Jason if he wants me or somebody to come in and call a play and be able to pull a play off if a bad situation happened, I would be willing to do that," Kitna said.
Orton is slated to start while Kitna's running the scout team, something he's done for his high school's football team.
"He said he would run scout team for the high school team and give them a really good look like he gave us great looks when he was here," Garrett said. "So he's a very active guy. He's a mentally tough guy. ... And he's certainly very young at heart. So it was good to have him back, good to have him back in the meetings, and [I'm] excited to see him practice today."
If Kitna ends up having to play on Sunday, something's probably gone badly awry. The last time he started a game was 2010, when he filled in for Romo after the Cowboys starter suffered a collarbone injury that cost him most of the season.
But whether he starts or rides pine for the full 60 minutes, Kitna's full-time employer comes out ahead.
