Tampa, FL - It's that time again, "Survivor" returns tonight with its 28th season. This time the contestants are separated by the quality that will most likely help them win the million dollar prize -- brains, brawn and beauty.
In the beauty tribe, you'll find L.J. McKanas, who can also be found at Tampa Bay Downs, as a horse owner and trainer.
"I need to be hands-on with everything," said McKanas, as he prepared his five-year-old gelding Fiddler's Celt for a recent race at Tampa Bay Downs.
But controlling his animals might be a lot easier than controlling the other 17 castaways on "Survivor: Cagayan." All of them are trying to win a million dollar prize.
McKanas, a former college football standout and model, told us he's wanted to be a part of Survivor since the show began, " It was my freshman year in college when the show came out, and it was all these people battling the elements and having challenges and social game and voting each other out. Ever since the game's inception, I was like, 'Oh I have to do that!"
College, career and missed deadlines kept him off the show until now.
Moments after the game began, the Survivor contestants learned about this season's twist--when they were put on teams based on their brain, brains and beauty.
"I'm looking around and I'm like, 'Did they put me on the beauty tribe?'" said McKanas. "I said maybe I'm the 'inside beauty' guy. I don't know. I don't see myself as a beauty person."
Instead, McKanas sees himself as more of a brawny type...with a secret weapon.
"I love puzzles. I love logic, I love intellectual things. I love strategic things and figuring stuff out," said McKanas. "As long as you see me as something less than I am, I win."
In the race for Sole Survivor, McKanas doesnt mind being a dark horse.
"When I'm out here and I'm training and I'm the favorite, I get anxiety, because all I can do is fail" says McKanas. "But I like to overcome adversity and challenges."
You can see how he does on the two-hour premiere of "Survivor" Wednesday at 8p.m. right here on 10 News.
