St. Petersburg, FL -- First the good news for those tired of all those Congressional District 13 television ads, the election is just 13 days away.
And if you thought there were a lot of ads you're right.
Try more than $8 million worth of local TV spots.
The Tampa Bay Times reports Democrat Alex Sink and her supporters have spent $4.6 million getting their message out, Republican David Jolly and his supporters another $3.7 million, while Libertarian Lucas Overby tells 10 News neither he nor his supporters have spent a dime on TV time.
"All that money could be put too much better use. I'm sure," said Jean Cornillaud, a potential voter when told of the amount.
"That money should be going someplace else," added Larry Hayden another potential District 13 voter.
But USF Professor of Political Science Dr. Susan MacManus says there's a big risk for the candidates running so many ads, especially since the vast majority are negative.
"The fear for both candidates is that the independents are going to be so alienated they aren't going to vote," MacManus said. "And of course it's really important for Alex Sink that she have younger voters and they tend to be alienated by ads."
In addition, some voters tell 10 News they no longer believe what they see on TV which calls into question the overall effectiveness of the ads.
"But the bottom line is to reach a lot of voters in a hurry you pretty much have to use television and television is expensive," MacManus noted.
Jolly, Overby and Sink will face off March 11 in the race to replace Congressmen C.W. Bill Young.
Now the bad news for those tired of all the political ads, there will be another Congressional District 13 race in the fall.
