Will Rhymes sits up after he collapses on the field with manager Joe Maddon and the trainer after he got hit by a pitch in the eighth inning against the Boston Red Sox at Tropicana Field.
St. Petersburg, Florida - It was a scary moment for Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Will Rhymes Wednesday night. In the eighth inning of a game versus the Boston Red Sox, Rhymes was hit in the right forearm by a pitch.
Rhymes was able to stay in the game for a few minutes after being hit, but eventually he passed out, collapsed and was carted off the field.
A local doctor says the delayed reaction was likely the result of an adrenaline rush.

"You may not feel the full effects of (something like this) until you get your breath and sometimes it takes just a few seconds for it to register," said Dr. Dan Stahl, an orthopaedic trauma surgeon with Tampa General Hospital and the Florida Orthopaedic Institute.
In Rhymes' case, it was actually a few minutes, after he had gone to first base.
"These are professional athletes. There's a tight game and so there's a lot of adrenaline going on and certainly that can overcome some of the ... immediate pain that he was feeling and can cause it to be a little delayed like that."

Surprisingly Rhymes says he did not break a bone and his forearm is only bruised. However, the Rays are still listing Rhymes as day to day.
"It's a dangerous game. You'd be surprised what can actually happen out on the field so we're thankful he's OK and hopefully he can get back soon," Rays teammate Matt Joyce said.
