St. Petersburg, Florida -- Rays manager Joe Maddon was named by 100 Major League Baseball players as the "smartest manager" in Major League Baseball.
The survey, conducted by Men's Journal Magazine, reveals Maddon won the title with 25% of the votes. Angels manager Mike Scioscia came in second with 20% and Tigers manager Jim Leyland came in third with 8% of the votes.
When asked why they voted for Maddon, the magazine says most praised him for being innovative on the field.
"Not everything he does works, but he's not scared to try things that might look different or that some people might think are crazy," said a former utility player of Maddon's.
A.J. Pierzynski was named the "most hated player" in baseball in a landslide victory with 34% of the votes.
The full poll results will be available in the July issue of Men's Journal on newstands Friday, June 15.
