TAMPA, Florida - The stars came out in Tampa Bay to support the 10th annual Derek Jeter Celebrity Golf Classic. A glitzy, Hollywood-style launch party was held at the Hard Rock with Jeter himself as the host.
"I fell in love with Tampa Bay and I love it here. I love it that people come for the tournament each year," Jeter told 10 News.
He added with a big smile, "I can hide out here and be myself."
The red carpet was full of Jeter's buddies, such as local favorite Shelton Quarles, the Rays' own Don Zimmer, and star of the hit show Entourage, Kevin Connolly.
Quarles said, "Once you become part of a community, you never want to leave. I think we should have more events like this."
Zimmer and his wife also stopped to speak with 10 News. "This is tremendous. I'm so glad Jeter has his tournament here each year."
Jeter's foundation helps disadvantaged youth make healthy life choices through sports and education.
Connolly said, "I love helping out Derek." He has roots in Wesley Chapel where his extended family resides.
The tournament will help raise money for young people in both Tampa Bay and New York, along with the city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, where Jeter is from. "I'm not much of a golfer. In fact my game gets worse each year. But we do this for the kids," he said.
