NEW YORK (AP) - It was a very democratic Triple Crown this year -- three different horses have captured each leg of this year's horse racing's showcase.
Longshot Palace Malice, under Mike Smith, relished the extra distance and won the mile and a-half Belmont Stakes for trainer Todd Pletcher. It was the second Belmont Stakes triumph for both Smith and Pletcher. Palace Malice finished a well-beaten 12th in the Kentucky Derby, and sat out the Preakness.
Preakness winner Oxbow ran second and Kentucky Derby winner Orb was third.
Palace Malice paid $29.60 for a two-dollar ticket.
