Tampa, FL-- Plant HS senior defensive back Mazzi Wilkins has made an oral committment to play football at USF next year.

Mazzi made his announcement at the Plant HS Fieldhouse, Thursday afternoon.

Mazzi is 6'1", 185 pounds, with the ability to play either cornerback or safety, according to Plant Head Coach Robert Weiner.

Mazzi said he felt a family atmosphere on the USF team with first-year head coach, Willie Taggart.  Plus, he likes being close to his Tampa home.

"On top of that, there are 15 other recruits in the area who committed," Wilkins told 10 News.   "And I want to be part of something new... I don't want to be part of something that's a has-been... I want to start a dynasty myself, and be a part of that."

Plant High is one of the highest-ranked teams in the area, coming off a state championship.  The Panthers play their kickoff classic Saturday afternoon, at 3pm, against Tallahassee Godby at Raymond James Stadium.
