USF trio comes up short of U.S. Open dream at qualifying

Vero Beach, Florida -- A trio of USF Bulls all trying to make it into the field for this month's U.S. Open failed to score well enough in Monday's sectional qualifier to advance. Only four of the 55 players at the Vero Beach qualifying site will move on to play in one of the PGA Tour's top events of the year.

Trey Valentine shot even par, Richard James shot 4-over and Chase Koepka finished 5-over at Quail Valley Golf Club. Valentine missed the chance to play in the Open by two shots after shooting rounds of 75 and 69 in the 36-hole qualifying event.

Davenport teenager Sam Horsfield missed the cut by a single shot. He fired 74 and 69 – good enough to be named one of the two alternates from that qualifying site.

The U.S. Open will be played at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club June 9-15 in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
