High school football player dies after freak accident

Ethan Hawks, a junior football player at Whittier Christian (La Habra, Calif.), has died.

The school announced the news on its Facebook page.

Hawks, 17, had been in an induced coma since a Nov. 19 car accident. He and his mother were traveling on the 57 Freeway when a metal object crashed their the windshield, according to a GoFundMe page posted after the accident. The piece of metal was roughly 7 to 10 pounds.

His carotid artery was cut and he suffered extensive damage to his jaw and cheekbone, the page said. His mother attempted to stop the bleeding and drove immediately to the hospital.

He had a bad reaction to medication he was given Wednesday night and was stabilized after going into septic shock.
