Even without its star running back, the Largo Packers closed out the regular season in style with a 42-14 win over Countryside Friday night. The win means the Packers enter the playoffs next week with a 8-2 record and the Cougars' season ends with a 6-4 mark.
Jarvis Stewart will not be with the Packers for the rest of the season after being arrested this week. Senior Raheem Harvey stepped into his shoes as the Packers' top player-maker in the first quarter. Donovan Hale hooked up with Harvey for a 3-yard touchdown pass on Largo's third play of the game to give the Pack a 7-0 lead.
Later in the first quarter, Harvey hauled in a long touchdown grab over the outstretched arms of Damien Howard. The Packers took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter.
Countryside hung tough thanks to some nice throws by quarterback Robby Hicks. The senior rolled out and hit Avery Cole for a big gain down the home sideline. That set up a 26-yard touchdown run by Dante Satcher one play later to pull the Cougars to within 14-7.
Harvey, an FAU commit, hauled in his third touchdown of the game in the third quarter to give the Packers a 35-7 lead. Stewart's replacement, Eric Patten, iced the game with a long touchdown run of his own.
The Packers will host the Jefferson Dragons in the first round of the state playoffs next Friday. The Dragons finished the regular season with a perfect 5-0 road record and won those games by an average score of 45-10. Largo won every home game this season except for a 22-0 loss to undefeated East Lake.
