Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Washington Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth underwent surgery on Monday to repair a broken left wrist suffered during Sunday's 9-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Nationals announced that Werth had the procedure performed by Dr. Richard A. Berger at the Mayo Clinic. While a recovery time is unclear, most players who suffer this type of break usually take 10-to-12 weeks to fully recover.

Werth's rehab will begin immediately and he is expected to begin strengthening exercises in six weeks.

With two down in the sixth inning, Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco sliced a fly ball to right. Werth, playing deep, came charging in for the ball, went into a slide to make the catch and bent back his wrist. The ball fell out of his glove and Werth immediately grabbed the wrist in pain.

Werth has a history of trouble with the wrist, which was broken on a pitch from A. J. Burnett in 2005. He was able to play 102 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers that season, but surgery revealed two ligament tears, which caused him to miss the entire 2006 campaign.

In that instance, Dr. Berger was able to provide a proper diagnosis which prevented a premature end to Werth's career, The Washington Post reported earlier Monday.
