Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned reliever Evan
Meek to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.
An All-Star in 2010, Meek has struggled this season, pitching to a 7.59 earned
run average. The right-hander has allowed nine runs on 13 hits in 10 2/3
innings.
Meek endured a forgettable 2011 campaign as injuries limited him to only 24
appearances.
Two years ago, he compiled a 2.14 ERA in a career-high 70 games.
To fill Meek's roster spot, the Pirates summoned outfielder Gorkys Hernandez
from Indianapolis. He batted .266 with two homers and 14 RBI in 38 games this
year.
The 24-year-old Hernandez's first appearance with Pittsburgh will mark his
major league debut.
