St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Ben Zobrist knocked in the game-winning
run with an RBI double in the bottom of the 14th inning to lift the Rays to a
4-3 victory over the Mariners in the opener of a three-game set Friday at
Tropicana Field.
Carlos Pena ripped a one-out single to right off Tom Wilhelmsen (3-2) in the
14th and Zobrist followed with a ground ball down the first-base line.
Ichiro Suzuki corralled the ball in the right-field corner, but air mailed the
cut-off man, allowing Pena to score from first as he slid in just in front of
the tag from catcher Jesus Montero.
Jake McGee (3-2) earned the victory after retiring the final two hitters in
the 14th. Zobrist reached base six times and finished with three hits and an
RBI, while Jeff Keppinger plated a pair to give the Rays their ninth straight
victory over the Mariners.
Carlos Peguero clubbed a two-run homer for Seattle, which has dropped two of
its last three games.
