Budweiser petitions to make MLB Opening Day a holiday

Tampa, Florida -- Budweiser has teamed up with Major League Baseball to petition Washington to make the MLB Opening Day a National Holiday.

Budweiser contends many Americans say they already take the day off for Opening Day so they can go to a ballgame, or only work a half-day on that date. With over 102,000 signatures already compiled, the petition has been submitted to the White House, but Budweiser is still encouraging baseball fans to add their name to the movement.

Locally, Pepin Distributing Company and Great Bay Distributing Company have partnered with the Tampa Bay Rays to make Opening Day a local Rays Holiday.

This year, the Rays Opening Day against the Toronto Blue Jays at The Trop falls on March 31 -- Major League Baseball's Opening Day!

Game time is 4:10 p.m., but starting at noon, Budweiser and the Rays will host an Opening Day Holiday Tailgate Party. The Holiday Tailgate Party will feature music, day fresh Budweiser beer, Rays players, lots of other promotional activities and fun with other Rays fans.

"Pepin Distributing Company and Great Bay Distributors want to show Major League Baseball what a great baseball community the Tampa Bay area is" said Bill Gieseking, director of marketing for Pepin Distributing Company. "We are promoting the Budweiser petition heavily and hope that we can get enough signed petitioners to make the Tampa Bay market the leader in the League."

So far, the Rays are in 3rd place in the American League East with over 2,500 signatures, behind the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
