MMA fighter helps baby dolphin that washed ashore

(USATODAY.com) - Irish MMA fighter Cathal Pendred was in the right place at the right time to help a baby dolphin that had been washed up on shore in Co Clare, Ireland. Pendred, who was out for a walk with his girlfriend, came upon a group of people trying to help a stranded dolphin.

Pendred struggled to get the dolphin far enough out to avoid being caught by the waves.

Via Fox Sports:

"There was a man in the water trying to help the dolphin and I went in to help. The man told me he had been there for a while trying to push him back out but the dolphin kept getting washed back in. The man said he was now exhausted so I told him I would take over trying to help…. I continued trying to push the dolphin out past the waves but he continued to get washed back in. He was bleeding and had a lot of cuts so I think it was due to these injuries that he wasn't strong enough to swim past the break."

Eventually, Pendred was able to push the dolphin to a safe location. Unfortunately, Pendred reports that the dolphin later washed ashore again.

Pendred competes in The Ultimate Fighter, a reality series that funnels successful contestants into the UFC. Pendred won his first TUF fight against Hector Urbina last week.
