Dan Wheldon's son kicks off Grand Prix karting event

Palmetto, Florida -- Time to start your engines!

A special guest helped kick off the Fourth Annual Firestone Grand Prix of St. Pete.

5-year-old Sebastian Wheldon is following in the footsteps of his father', the late Dan Wheldon, by leading the teams in an honorary pace lap to mark the start of the karting event Wednesday afternoon in Palmetto. Teams are grouped at random and paired up with a professional driver to engage in some friendly competition.

Wheldon's widow Susie told 10 News her young son is passionate about racing. She says he frequently asks, "Mommy, is today a karting day? Can we go karting?"

She said it's fun to watch him take the path.

The Firestone Grand Prix of Saint Pete starts March 28 and goes through the 30.
