Lawrenceville, NJ (Sports Network) - Brandon Penn knocked down a three-pointer
with one second left to give the Rider Broncs a 74-73 win over the Niagara
Purple Eagles in a thrilling Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest at
Alumni Gymnasium.
Penn's game-winner gave him a double-double as he finished with 11 points and
11 rebounds for Rider (10-15, 7-6 MAAC). Jeff Jones led the Broncs with 18
points and Anthony Myles chipped in 13 points. Jonathon Thompson contributed
11 points and seven assists in the winning effort.
Marvin Jordan led the Purple Eagles (9-16, 4-9) with 24 points off the bench.
Antoine Mason provided a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds and
Malcolm Lemmons netted 13 points. Juan'ya Green was held to just six points,
but dished out a game-high eight assists.
Niagara took a 41-32 advantage into the intermission after it shot 40 percent
from the floor in the opening period. The Broncs made only 35.7 percent of
their field goals in the first half.
Rider charged back after the break with a 11-of-18 shooting performance from
beyond the arc in the second half. The Purple Eagles saw their lead disappear
despite shooting 43.3 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Niagara led 71-64 with 3:11 left to play before a 7-0 run by the Broncs tied
it up with 38 seconds to go. Mason put the Purple Eagles up 73-71 which set up
Penn's game-winner.
Despite the loss, Niagara held a 42-33 advantage in the rebounding battle.
