Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Jarred Shaw scored 15 points and pulled
down eight rebounds before fouling out, contributing to Utah State's 80-78
overtime win against the Santa Clara Broncos in non-conference action at the
Leavey Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Aggies (4-1) were Danny Berger, Preston
Medlin and Kyisean Reed with 11 points apiece, the latter also coming up with
seven rebounds and four steals off the bench.
The Broncos (5-1) were paced by Kevin Foster who erupted for 27 points,
followed by Evan Roquemore with 23 points and a game-high nine assists.
A close game throughout, both teams shot just under 45 percent from the floor
and turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, which meant the slightest
edge by either side could determine the outcome. In this case, the Aggies made
one more field goal in the frame in order to grab a 34-33 edge at the break.
In the second half Utah State converted a sizzling 70 percent from the floor,
but still Santa Clara kept hanging around and the Aggies needed a three-
pointer by Medlin with three seconds left in regulation to knot the score at
70-70 and send it to overtime.
In the extra session, Medlin again made a key three-pointer midway through to
give the visitors a four-point edge, but SCU's Roquemore responded late with a
triple of his own to draw the Broncos to within one point, 79-78, with 12
seconds remaining. Berger connected on the second of his two free throws with
six seconds to play, which still left the Broncos with one final gasp, but
this time Roquemore missed the mark from long range at the buzzer.
With a 5-0 mark heading into play against USU, the Broncos were off to their
best start since the 1968-69 campaign.
