Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Ryan Broekhoff scored a game-high 21 points
and pulled down nine rebounds as the Valparaiso Crusaders registered a 63-52
win over the Mastodons of IUPU-Ft. Wayne in non-conference play at the
Athletics-Recreation Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Crusaders (6-2), as they won for the
fourth time in the last five outings, was Kevin Van Wijk with 12 points, to go
along with six rebounds before fouling out.
The Mastodons (5-5) were paced by Frank Gaines who delivered 19 points,
shooting 4-of-5 behind the three-point line as the team bowed for the second
time in the last three games.
IPFW led by as many as three points with six minutes left to play in the first
half, but the team was outscored at the free-throw line, 10-3, in the period
which allowed the hosts to post a 35-32 advantage at the break.
In the second half Valpo made a total of only nine field goals, including 2-
of-9 beyond the arc, but that was still considerably better than the Mastodons
who sank a mere four field goals, on their way to the 11-point decision.
IPFW, which turned the ball over 16 times, converted only 31.4 percent from
the floor in the contest.
