Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Mikh McKinney scored 18 points to lead the
Sacramento State Hornets past the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 64-59, in a Big
Sky conference bout at the Nest.
Konner Veteto added 14 points and eight rebounds and Dylan Garrity chipped
in 12 points and six assists for Sacramento State (7-5, 2-2 Big Sky) which had
lost four of its previous five games.
Jackson Stevenett posted a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds for
Southern Utah (5-8, 3-1) and Damon Heuir tallied 14 points. The Thunderbirds
had won three of their previous four.
After the Hornets opened the game on a 14-2 run Southern Utah rallied and
trailed by just three points, 29-26, at halftime. Both teams struggled in the
period with the Hornets hitting on 33.3 percent of their field goal attempts
and the Thunderbirds successful on just 30.8 percent.
In the second half Sacramento State heated up to 53.3 percent shooting and
used a 17-7 edge from the free throw line to pull out the victory.
The Thunderbirds hit just 32.2 percent of their shots overall but managed to
outscore the Hornets by an 18-9 margin from beyond the arc. Sacramento State
attempted 55 free throws, 29 of which found the bottom of the net.
