Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Kevin Hartley contributed a team-high 14
points as the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs held on to defeat the College of
Charleston Cougars, 55-52,in BracketBusters action at TD Arena.
Hartley also contributed six rebounds for the Bulldogs (18-11). Tashan Newsome
chipped in 12 points and seven boards as Gardner-Webb moved to a five-game
winning streak.
For the Cougars (20-9), Andrew Lawrence recorded a game-high 16 points to go
with five rebounds and four assists. He was the only player in double-figures
as Charleston had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Both teams shot below 40 percent from the floor in the first half but the
Cougars hit five triples to take a 30-27 lead into the break.
In the second, Charleston was held to 29 percent from the floor including a
mere 1-of-13 from beyond the arc. Gardner-Webb made 10-of-26 from the floor
and 7-of-10 free throws, en route to the three-point victory.
Gardner-Webb forced 14 turnovers, while limiting it's own total to six.
Gardner-Webb outscored Charleston, 13-8, in points off turnovers.
