Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Jarred Shaw recorded a double-double with 18
points and 11 rebounds as the Utah State Aggies took down the Illinois State
Redbirds, 80-71, as part of BracketBusters weekend at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Spencer Butterfield scored 16 points on 7-of-9 from the field for Utah State
(19-7), which has won five of its last seven contests. TeNale Roland poured in
13 points off the bench, Marvin Jean had 10 points and Marcel Davis tallied
nine points, eight assists and six rebounds.
Tyler Brown was fantastic for Illinois State (16-13), shooting 11-of-22 from
the field, including 7-of-14 from beyond the arc, for 35 points, one off his
career-high set on Nov. 24 against Northwestern. Jackie Carmichael was stellar
as well with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Brown also corralled 10
rebounds.
Illinois State led by as many as 11 less than eight minutes into the first
half, but Utah State came storming back to take a 36-32 advantage heading into
intermission. The Aggies shot 44.4 percent from the field in the first half,
compared to just 33.3 percent for the Redbirds.
The Aggies' field goal efficiency improved to a lofty 58.6 percent after
halftime as they held on for the win.
Illinois State committed just 11 turnovers, but Utah State took full advantage
with 17 points off of those miscues.
