CBSSsports.com has fired the person who wrote a story on the website that prematurely reported the death of former Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

Adam Jacobi posted Friday on his Twitter that he had been let go.

"I had an awesome 17 months with CBSSports.com. I'm sorry to everyone, most importantly the Paterno family, for how it ended."

He then added:

"In the end, CBS had to let me go for the Paterno story going out the way it did, and I understand completely. Thanks, everyone, for reading."

The premature posting of Paterno's death by CBSSports.com was triggered by a tweet from Onward State that later proved to be inaccurate. CBSSports.com was one of the sites that picked up the story. The Paterno family quickly denied the report.

Onward State's managing editor Devon Edwards resigned and the site issued an apology that night. CBSSports.com also issued an apology.
