Berea, OH (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Browns have apparently settled on Brandon Weeden as their starting quarterback.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, head coach Pat Shurmur made the announcement after practice on Monday.

Weeden was selected with the 22nd overall pick of April's draft and will get the starting nod ahead of Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace. The Oklahoma State product will make his first start on Friday when the Browns open the preseason against Detroit.

Barring a change or injury, Weeden's first official NFL start will come in Week 1 at home against Philadelphia in September.

The 29-year-old rookie was a minor league pitcher before giving up baseball and enrolling at Oklahoma State.

McCoy was Cleveland's starter for the first 13 games last season before he suffered a concussion in December after taking a helmet-to-chin hit from Pittsburgh's James Harrison.

The Texas product, starting his third NFL season, threw for 2,733 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year. The Browns were 4-9 with McCoy under center and lost their final three games with Wallace to finish 4-12.
