3 Gators among Bucs final roster cuts

Its set; the Buccaneers 53-man roster was turned in to the NFL league office by the four o'clock deadline this afternoon. Coming into today, the Bucs had 8 more players to trim the roster down to the chosen few who will open up the season against the Carolina Panthers next Sunday.

Three former Florida Gators were among those chopped. Olympic silver-medalist sprinter Jeff Demps devoted himself to football but was unable to stick with the Bucs at a log jammed running back position.

Demps saw repetitions at kick returner as well, but that spot looked as if it was sewn up by Solomon Patton. Patton's waive may have been the biggest surprise considering his ample time on returns and a touchdown reception in the final preseason game against the Redskins.

Quarterback Mike Kafka joins Tight End Cameron Barte, Linebacker Brandon Magee, and Defensive Tackle Matt Masifilo as those who were waived.

Major Wright, another former Gator, was released.

Lovie Smith brought in the safety from his former team in Chicago. Wright has played in 54 games in the NFL, all with the Bears over 4 seasons.

Defensive Tackle, Ronald Talley, was also released.

TE Cameron Brate
