Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Brandon Morrow hurled 6 2/3 effective innings on Friday and the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Rogers Centre.
Morrow (8-5) gave up one run on eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts to put an end to a personal two-game losing streak. Steve Delabar worked 1 1/3 perfect innings in relief and Casey Janssen was bailed out of trouble in the ninth inning to earn his 19th save of the season.
Edwin Encarnacion hit a solo home run, while Moises Sierra smoked a solo home run and helped out defensively by throwing out Elliot Johnson at the plate for the final out of the game.
Desmond Jennings accounted for the lone run with a home run and Jeremy Hellickson (8-10) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits over six innings for the Rays, who have lost six of their last seven.
