Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rapids signed Brazilian Luis
Eduardo "Edu" Schmidt, a forward who has experience in Spain's La Liga and the
UEFA Champions League, on Thursday.
The 33-year-old Edu started his club career with Sao Paulo in Brazil, and moved
to Spain in 2000 with Celta. He also played for Real Betis in Spain. Edu later
returned to Brazil in 2009, playing for Internacional and Vitoria.
"Edu is a skilled and creative forward with a great deal of experience," Rapids
technical director Paul Bravo said. "His signing will bolster our attack and
we're happy to add him to the roster."
Edu helped Celta to its first-ever appearance in the UEFA Champions League, and
scored 28 goals in 117 games with the club. At Betis, he scored 41 goals in 136
games over five seasons as the team reached its first Champions League.
Edu, who made one appearance for Brazil in 2000, will be eligible to join the
Rapids pending receipt of his P-1 work visa and ITC, and results of a medical.
Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
