Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew have signed midfielder Chris
Birchall to a multi-year contract.
The 28-year-old Birchall, a Trinidad and Tobago international, played the last
three years with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He appeared in 57 matches, including
46 starts, and helped L.A. win the MLS Cup in 2011.
"We were looking for some experience and Birchall knows the league very well,"
said Crew coach Robert Warzycha. "He's a hard-working, experienced midfielder
and we're a hard-working team so he is going to fit in well."
Birchall started his career in England with second-division side Port Wale and
also had stints with Coventry City and Brighton and Hove Albion in the English
Championship, in addition to loan deals with Scotland's St. Mirren and English
side Carlisle United.
On the international level, Birchall has appeared in 39 games for Trinidad and
Tobago and played in all three group matches of 2006 World Cup.
"I feel delighted to be joining Columbus Crew," Birchall said.
Per club and league policy, no further terms of the deal were disclosed.
