Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew announced the signing of
Designated Player Federico Higuain on Friday from Argentine club Colon.
Higuain becomes the third DP in Crew history and will be the only current one
on the team's roster.
"On behalf of our club, we are extremely excited to bring another world-class
player to Crew fans and to the Columbus market," Crew president and general
manager Mark McCullers said in a statement. "Federico is a talented, technical
and speedy attacking player who will add another dimension to our offense."
The 27-year-old forward spent the past two seasons with Colon, scoring 10
goals in 62 games, while previously spending time with Godoy Cruz and
Independiente in Argentina.
Higuain's brother, Gonzalo, is a standout striker for Real Madrid, and
Federico joins the Crew having also spent time with Turkish side Besiktas as
well as Mexico's Club America.
"We had our eye on Higuain for quite some time," said Crew head coach Robert
Warzycha. "He's a fast forward who played successfully in a very good league.
He's very opportunistic and a good finisher, and he can play as a winger or as
a second forward."
