Tom Pernice Junior in early lead at PGA Championship

ATLANTA (AP) — Tom Pernice Junior has the early clubhouse lead after carding a 1-under-par 69 in the first round of the PGA Tour Championship.

Just 27 golfers are teeing it up in Atlanta today. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are too tired to play in the season-ending tournament that usually brings together the top 30 golfers on the money list. And Stephen Ames is sidelined by a back injury.

It's the smallest field since the event began in 1987.
