Lake Buena Vista, Fla. — Maurice Stovall is ready to step up. Not only as a receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but possibly, as a starter.
Through the first two days of training camp, coach Jon Gruden has singled out Stovall during post-practice interviews. That's a good thing for Stovall because Gruden is looking for someone to challenge Michael Clayton as the number two wideout.
Stovall caught only seven passes during his rookie season, but he has worked hard off the field to prepare for this big opportunity.
"It's good to know that the coach is noticing your work ethic," Stovall said. "I think for any player, if the coach compliments you on your work ethic, that's a big plus. The important thing is to keep it up."
The second-year player from Notre Dame gets praise from all his quarterbacks, especially training camp roommate Bruce Gradkowski.
"You watch him catch the football and he's gonna run down to the end zone every time. You love seeing that," Gradkowski said. "He works hard. Gets his body in shape. That's why he's better this year."
And that's why Gruden expects big things from Stovall.
"He's much more in shape than he’s ever been," Gruden said. "He can move for a big guy. It’s a credit to him. He’s gonna make things real interesting."
