Montpellier, France (Sports Network) - Sixth-seeded Florian Mayer and former
top-five star Nikolay Davydenko were among Monday's first-round winners at the
Open Sud de France tennis event.
The German Mayer got past Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, while the
unseeded wild card Davydenko, of Russia, drubbed France's Stephane Robert 6-2,
6-1 on the indoor hardcourt at The Arena. Davydenko will face sweet-swinging
French favorite Richard Gasquet in the second round.
One other Day-1 winner was French wild card Guillaume Rufin.
This week's top seeds are Czech Tomas Berdych and French stars Gilles Simon,
Gael Monfils and Gasquet, all of whom received opening-round byes. Monfils
titled here two years ago.
The winner of this $518,000 tournament will collect $95,000.
