New Haven, CT (Sports Network) - Marion Bartoli and Lucie Safarova, the only
ranked players to play at the $637,000 New Haven Open at Yale on Sunday, both
advanced to the second round.
Bartoli, seeded fifth, downed Laura Robson, 6-3, 6-3, in one hour, 25 minutes,
while the eighth-seeded Safarova was cruising 6-3, 4-1 before Varvara
Lepchenko retired with a left wrist injury.
Also moving on in the final U.S. Open tune-up were Sloane Stephens and Carla
Suarez Navarro. Stephens blew past Tamira Paszek, 6-3, 6-1, and Suarez Navarro
broke Agnes Szavay's final serve to win, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 on the hardcourts at
the Connecticut Tennis Center.
Danish star Caroline Wozniacki defeated Czech Petra Cetkovska in last year's
finale to claim her fourth straight title at this event.
The 2012 New Haven champion will collect $107,000.
