Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Mercury signed guard Diana Taurasi
and forward Penny Taylor to multi-year contract extensions on Monday.
Taurasi tied Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry for the league lead in scoring,
averaging 21.6 points per game. The 2009 WNBA MVP, Taurasi also averaged 3.6
assists and 3.2 rebounds this season.
Taylor averaged 16.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.7 steals in 2011.
"Diana and Penny have been the face of this franchise for eight years and we
look forward to that remaining true for years to come," said Phoenix
president/GM Ann Meyers Drysdale. "Their loyalty to this franchise and
commitment to excellence on the court has taken us to elite status in the
WNBA. Their incredible accomplishments, personality and professionalism have
made them two of the most recognizable and respected players in the league."
The Mercury finished the regular season with a 19-15 record and will begin
their quest for a third title since 2007 on Thursday, when they visit the
defending champion Seattle Storm in Game 1 of the Western Conference
semifinals.
