Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Cappie Pondexter registered a double-double of
21 points and 12 rebounds, Plenette Pierson scored 17 points and the New York
Liberty battled back to beat the Los Angeles Sparks, 73-71, on Sunday.
Essence Carson supplied 14 points for the Liberty, who moved into fourth place
in the Eastern Conference.
New York, which erased a 15-point deficit, are a half-game ahead of Chicago
for the final playoff berth. The Sky were beaten by Connecticut later Sunday.
Kristi Toliver paced playoff-bound Los Angeles with 17 points, while Candace
Parker totaled 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Carson drained a 3-pointer, tying the game at 70-all with 48.1 seconds
remaining. Pondexter then made two free throws to put New York ahead. Toliver
missed a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining after teammate Ebony Hoffman
sank a free throw.
Pondexter's free throw with 2.2 seconds remaining sealed the win.
