(USA TODAY) Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet are underway on Insurgent, the second installment of the blockbuster Divergent franchise.
Principal photography began in Atlanta, Lionsgate studios announced on Tuesday. The new film will hit theaters March 20, 2015.
Octavia Spencer joins the returning cast, which includes Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q and Mekhi Phifer.
Divergent proved itself to be a hit when it opened in March, making $260 million in worldwide box office. The story is based on first-time author Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy, which has sold more than 22 million copies worldwide.
The plot of Insurgent features Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) as fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite.
"Racing against time, they must find out what Tris's family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world," a Lionsgate release states about the plot.
The third and fourth installments of the series, Allegiant -- Parts 1 & 2, are due to be released March 18, 2016 and March 24, 2017 respectively.
