SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --Pickleball is a cross between ping pong and tennis. It is played with a whiffle ball and a paddle. It's popularity is increasing rapidly in Maine. In one year, the number of courts has increased from 2 to 28.
The sport is played on a 20 x 44 court and usually played outside. The court is striped like a tennis court. There is a line seven feet from the net on both sides, inside which the ball cannot be played, unless it hits the ground.
The game begins with an underhanded serve diagonally into the alternate service court. The serving team cannot hit the return until the return hits the ground. At this point each team usually approaches the no volley line and a series of quick returns ensues.
It is particularly popular among seniors as it gives one a great workout without a lot of running. It can be played by people of all ages.
