AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Prosecutors have dismissed charges against a former Clinton police officer who had been accused of domestic assault.

Prosecutors say in the dismissal filed this week in Kennebec County Superior Court there is insufficient evidence to move forward with the charges filed in March against 38-year-old Scott Francis of Chelsea.

Francis' lawyer tells the Kennebec Journal that he knew charges would be dismissed because "it was clear from the start of the investigation that there was no assault here."

Francis was fired in March 29 and his lawyer says he no longer works in law enforcement.

The charges stemmed from an alleged incident in March in Winslow. The alleged victims were 19 and 16 years old.
