LADY LAKE, Florida - Romney's brand new running mate is making his first trip through Florida as a vice presidential candidate.

Paul Ryan is in the Bay area tonight after a rally in front of thousands south of Gainesville earlier Saturday in Lake County.

It's the Wisconsin congressman's first visit to Florida since joining the Romney ticket one week ago. He's campaigning in The Villages, a massive retirement community south of Gainesville known for its support of the Republican Party.

Mary Kae Vickers was among those who made the drive up Interstate 75 from the Bay area to see Ryan speak for the first time. "It's really something when you get to see someone so important to our country," she said.

Carolyn Greer came dressed for a fight, wearing hot pink combat boots.

"This is a war! Our country is at stake," said Greer. "Mothers need to put on combat boots and get out and take this country back for our children."

A group of Obama supporters was also on hand outside of the gated rally. There was even an airplane towing a message overhead urging Ryan not to "mess with Medicare."

The congressman introduced his own mother, stressing the importance of Medicare reform for the future while taking care of today's seniors.

Heat was an issue for the 10:00 a.m. rally. Several seniors weretreated for heat exhaustion and Congressman Ryan evenpaused in the middle of his speech to point out someone who fell to the ground.

An estimated 10,000 were on hand for Ryan's visit. His fundraiser appearance is being held at the Club at Treasure Island and is closed to the public. Protestors are expected outside.
