Frisco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Stars signed pending unrestricted free-agent forward Ryan Garbutt to a three-year contract extension on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old winger has posted a career-best 18 points, with 10 goals and eight assists, in 46 games for Dallas this season. He ranks third on the club in hits with 81.
Garbutt served a five-game suspension earlier in the season for charging Anaheim Ducks forward Dustin Penner. Garbutt left his feet to deliver a high hit to the head area of Penner after the Anaheim wing was releasing a shot. He was not penalized for the incident.
"Ryan has snow that he is an effective, hard-hitting forward that plays the game with speed and tenacity," said Stars general manager Jim Nill in a statement Wednesday. "Over the course of the season, he has earned the trust of his coaching staff and has played himself into a role where we ask him to play against our opponent's top players on a nightly basis. It's a great credit to the work he has put in and we're excited to have him signed."
A native of Winnipeg, Garbutt has recorded 15 goals and 16 assists in 102 NHL contests, all for the Stars, over the last three seasons.
